Ever wondered what a content strategist for small businesses actually does in a typical week? I get this question more often than you might think, from curious business owners, fellow creatives, and even people who assume I “just post on Instagram.”

Let me take you behind the scenes of my week as the founder of Social by Chinwe, a social media and content strategy studio for coaches, creatives, and service-based brands. It’s a mix of planning, writing, collaborating, and occasionally spiraling in Canva (don’t judge).

Here’s what it really looks like to help small businesses stay consistent, visible, and intentional online.

Monday: Strategy + Content Calendar Planning

Mondays are CEO days. I spend the morning reviewing client goals and campaign metrics. Then, I map out content calendars for the week or month, depending on the project.

This plan includes:

  • Reviewing what performed well last week
  • Creating content themes (e.g., value, credibility, offer)
  • Aligning posts with client launches, offers, and business goals

Most people think being a content strategist for small businesses is just about being creative, but honestly? Strategy is 80% of the job.

Tuesday: Writing Days (Blog Posts, Captions, Emails)

Tuesday is for writing. Tuesdays are when I create:

  • Instagram captions
  • Email newsletters
  • Blog articles like this one
  • LinkedIn posts for clients and myself

Batching is key here. I follow my own Content Batching Checklist, which helps me write multiple pieces of content in one session so I don’t have to scramble later.

Pro tip: writing is easier when you already know why you’re posting and who you’re talking to.

Wednesday: Client Meetings + Edits

Midweek is usually meeting-heavy as a content strategist for small businesses. I check in with clients to present strategy updates, review content drafts, and collect feedback.

As a content strategist, I also help clients:

  • Brainstorm content pillars
  • Refine their messaging and offers
  • Clarify what makes them different online

Wednesdays are also when I do revisions, either tightening captions, reworking a post flow, or updating content based on performance.

Thursday: Design & Scheduling

Thursday is all about bringing the words to life visually. I jump into Canva to design:

  • Instagram carousels
  • Pinterest pins
  • Quote graphics or Reels covers

Once graphics are ready, I upload everything to scheduling tools like Meta Business Suite or Buffer. This part is where automation saves lives, especially when managing multiple brands.

I also optimize posts with hashtags, keywords, and alt text. Every post should be searchable and scroll-stopping.

Friday: My Brand + Creative Flow

Fridays are reserved for me. I create content for Social by Chinwe, work on offers, write newsletter drafts, or brainstorm blog topics.

Being a content strategist for small businesses means I invest a significant amount of creative energy in others. Still, I also have to pour energy into my brand if I want it to grow.

Sometimes I post behind-the-scenes Reels. At other times, I plan launches or simply journal ideas for future blog posts.

It’s a flexible day, but still intentional.

Weekend: Rest, Scroll, Reset

I try not to work on weekends (boundaries matter!). However, I sometimes scroll intentionally to observe trends, new features, or audio ideas that I might use later.

Creativity needs rest. So I log out, touch grass, and reset.

Finally

Being a content strategist for small businesses means wearing many hats: storyteller, researcher, coach, designer, and creative director all rolled into one. But at the heart of it? I’m helping brands show up online in a way that feels true, consistent, and aligned.

If you’re a business owner who’s tired of scrambling for content ideas, I’ve got you.
